Fitness and Wellness

The Chartwell Fitness and Wellness program prioritizes inclusivity, mental health awareness, and encourages students to find joy in movement and the outdoors. Defying traditional physical education class norms, the program thrives on a curriculum driven by student choice. The comprehensive, collaborative model touches on all aspects of health and wellness. All Chartwell students are encouraged to learn and utilize self-advocacy skills, try new activities and sports, and expand their definition of wellness to be all-encompassing with physical, mental, and emotional health.

Lower school classes focus on building a strong foundation in teamwork and sportsmanship. The program is designed to incorporate gross and fine motor skills in all activities so students can practice those skills both in and outside of the classroom. Students explore the cognitive aspect of the program by learning a variety of games and rules to build mental strength. The program fosters teamwork skills through positive interactions, and students are encouraged to navigate disagreements constructively through cooperation, team-building exercises, respect, and compromise.

Outdoor education is integrated into the program and students take full advantage of Chartwell’s 60 acres with hiking, biking, and exploring. For students who are interested in developing their skills in organized team sports, intramurals are offered to further develop specific skills at a foundational level. We currently offer intramural flag football, soccer, kickball, and afterschool athletics clubs; street hockey, wrestling, skateboarding, mountain biking, dance, one wheel, and surfing. If a Chartwell student is interested in introducing a new intramural team or club to campus, they are encouraged to work alongside the athletic department in bringing their ideas to life.
