A Message from the Director of the Lower School
Dear Prospective Family,
Welcome to our Lower School. We are thrilled to have your family considering Chartwell for the next step in your academic and social-emotional journey.
At Chartwell, we recognize that students need an environment that supports their unique learning profile. Our program meets students where they are academically and provides direct instruction in foundational literacy and math skills while continuing to provide enrichment opportunities in strength-based areas. Our program is designed specifically for students with language-based learning differences, and our mission is to ensure that every child is supported, celebrated, and understood.
Our curriculum is crafted for the students we serve. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach; instead, we design our classes and groupings based on each child's learning profile, current academic skills, and social-emotional needs.
For reading and math, we match students with similar goals and learning paces, while also considering age and social-emotional development. Our teachers are passionate, engaging, and innovative. They create a dynamic, multisensory environment where learning is active and where every student is encouraged to move, explore, and express themselves.
In addition to academics, we place a strong emphasis on social-emotional academic development (SEAD). Many of our students have difficulty recognizing and regulating their emotions, which can sometimes affect their ability to learn to the best of their ability.
Our program teaches students to identify their emotions and provides them with tools and strategies to be present for learning. In addition, we also incorporate character education, helping students understand and embody values like kindness, respect, and empathy.Through our strength-based programs in music, art, technology, STEAM, and outdoor education, we help students discover their unique talents and see the world in new and exciting ways.
As someone who has been with Chartwell for nearly a decade, I can confidently say that what we do here is nothing short of magical. Moving from Canada to work at Chartwell has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Just recently, I watched one of my first students graduate from high school, and it reminded me of the incredible journey our students take from the moment they arrive at Chartwell to the confident students they become.
I understand that enrolling your child here is a significant commitment—financially, logistically, and emotionally. But please know that we are dedicated to making this journey as smooth and successful as possible for your family. Early intervention is critical, and the longer a child goes without the support they need, the more challenging their path. We're here to bridge those gaps, rebuild their confidence, and provide them with a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive.
Whether your hope is for your child to make a friend, develop their strengths, or stay with us through high school, our goal is to ensure that every student finds success.
Thank you for looking at Chartwell for your child's education. We would be honored to be a part of their journey and are excited to help them grow and shine at Chartwell.
Warm regards,
Katherine Ramos
