Gardening

Chartwell maintains an organic garden as part of our beautiful green campus. The garden is overseen by adults but the students are the heart of this project. A variety of flowers, vegetables and herbs are grown there, which are subsequently used for eating raw, cooking in a specific dish, or used for decoration. Teachers take their language, math, humanities or science classes to the garden on a rotating basis.

Students are responsible for garden maintenance, which includes watering, planting new plants, transferring plants, composting, harvesting and making repairs to the enclosure. Many students find themselves drawn to the garden, and providing them with gardening activities and practical skills connects them to nature and the environment in meaningful ways.
