Ceramics

Nestled in the Marti Mulford Ceramics Studio, the ceramics program at Chartwell School encompasses grades 2 through 12 and is designed to reinforce and enhance student knowledge of art and design principles while fostering self-expression and the development of sensory response skills. Students improve both fine and gross motor skills through the manipulation of clay while hand building both functional products as well as sculptural pieces.

Students learn to follow both aesthetic and physical principles in constructing three-dimensional products that will be subject to the demands of storage, firing, glazing and, in many cases, practical use. The direct cause and effect nature of clay teaches planning and problem solving as students conceive, construct and handle their objects.

The Marti Mulford Ceramics Studio opened in the Fall of 2014. It was named after a local ceramic artist, Marti Mulford, who was dyslexic.
