Chartwell completes $750,000 Kresge Foundation Challenge
Seaside—Chartwell School has received $750,000 for its new green campus upon completion of a challenge from The Kresge Foundation. The Kresge Foundation had previously awarded the school a $75,000 Green Design grant to support its intentions to generate energy on site, conserve water, assure indoor air quality, and use healthy, sustainable materials and construction practices. The Kresge Foundation's mission is to strengthen nonprofit organizations that advance the well-being of humanity. Headquartered just outside of Detroit, Michigan, the Foundation had 2006 year-end assets of $3.3 billion and awarded approximately $150 million in grants in 2006 to organizations in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, South Africa, and Mexico.

Chartwell School educates students with a wide range of language-based learning challenges so that they can return successfully to mainstream education. Chartwell also provides education, research, community outreach and literacy services.

The new Chartwell campus at the former Ft. Ord is designed to the highest standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It also meets the standards for California High Performance Schools. During the agency's ninth annual Environmental Awards Ceremony in San Francisco on April 16th, U.S. EPA Regional Administrator Wayne Nastri recognized Chartwell’s new campus, which opened in 2006 on the reclaimed Fort Ord military base in Seaside, Calif. as a model of green building innovations. The school’s solar power system will produce more than 53 million watt-hours of renewable electricity per year, offsetting 54,000 pounds of carbon dioxide annually. Chartwell School is currently being used as an example for those competing in the Lifecycle Building Challenge, a national competition for green building ideas, policies, tools, and designs. More than 300 different organizations, from every state in the Union, have entered the challenge.

The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) has also featured the Chartwell campus, alongside three other schools as “extraordinarily unique places of learning that exceed our (CHPS) high performance requirements.” “ The execution and integration of the CHPS high performance guidelines in Chartwell School make it an excellent example for other schools to follow and learn from, ” said Charles Eley, CHPS Executive Director.

Chartwell School’s innovative campus is open to the community as an educational resource for sustainable building and environmental stewardship. To visit the school or learn more about its design features, call 831.394.3468 or visit www.chartwell.org
