Chartwell to Break Ground on New Campus

CHARTWELL TO BREAK GROUND FOR NEW CAMPUS Students, faculty, alumni, parents, donors, and civic leaders will celebrate the beginning of construction on September 6th at Chartwell’s 29 acre campus on the former Ft. Ord. The School has been operating from rented facilities for more than 22 years and this will be its first permanent home. The new school’s design includes many energy-saving and innovative features and has already won national attention. Since 1983, Chartwell School has educated students with a wide range of specific language-based learning difficulties, including dyslexia, in ways that provide them with the learning skills and self-esteem necessary to return successfully to mainstream education. Chartwell is the only school if its kind in the tri-county areas of Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz. The school offers an active financial aid program as well as a variety of outreach programs to share knowledge and experience with others. Chartwell currently enrolls 101 boys and girls, ages 6-14. The campus was designed by architectural firm EHDD of San Francisco, who also designed the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the new Monterey Peninsula College Library, the new CSUMB Library, and many other well-known buildings. With completion of Phase I, Chartwell will be able to expand enrollment to 120 students. Eventual completion of Phase II will allow for 160 students and programs for younger and older learners. The school will feature healthy materials, careful attention to ventilation and acoustics, radiant floor heating, and ample natural daylight, which has been shown to increase learning by 20% and more. It will generate its own electricity, resulting in net-zero energy use. Monterey County could soon have the first elementary school in the nation built to meet the highest standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED Platinum. Chartwell also meets California standards for High Performance Schools. Since schools and other projects are increasingly being designed built to these standards, the new campus is already serving as a resource for other projects. Chartwell’s and other students will also find it a resource for learning about scientific and engineering aspects of conservation. WHEN? September 6, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. WHERE?
