CHARTWELL RECEIVES $710,000 IN GRANTS FROM FOUR LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
Seaside, CA – The Board of Trustees of Chartwell School is pleased to announce four recent grants. The Barnet Segal Charitable Trust has granted $270,000 for the Capital Campaign for a new Chartwell campus. The Harden Foundation of Salinas has granted $240,000 for the new campus, and the Charitable Giving Program of Granite Construction, Inc., based in Watsonville, awarded $150,000, also in support of the new campus project. All three of these grants will be matched dollar for dollar by the Catherine L. and Robert O. McMahan Foundation as part of that foundation’s $4 million challenge grant to allow construction of a new campus at the former Ft. Ord. The Harden Foundation also granted an additional $30,000 as a matching challenge grant for Chartwell’s community outreach programs. The William McCaskey Chapman and Adaline Dinsmore Chapman Foundation of Carmel granted $20,000 as a matching grant for Chartwell’s financial aid program. Chartwell has awarded more than $280,000 in need-based financial aid during the current year and expects to award more than $317,000 next year.
“The generosity of our community continues to inspire our work,” said Douglas Atkins, Chartwell’s Executive Director. “More and more people are recognizing the potential that exists among children who can learn well, but who learn differently. We are proud to be part of reclaiming that potential. We are encouraged by the growing number of foundations, businesses, parents, community members, and other educators who want to see the research on literacy and learning put into practice throughout the Central Coast.” “We at the Barnet Segal Charitable Trust value the efforts of the Chartwell School in providing needed resources for the children of Monterey County with learning difficulties, “ said Stuart Berman and William Brodsley, Trustees. They added that they look forward to watching the new campus develop. “Our Contributions Committee was impressed with the Chartwell mission and the work they are doing to improve the lives of so many young students in Central California,” stated Bill Dorey, President and CEO of Granite Construction. “With the new campus, Chartwell will be here for the long term as a resource for our region,” noted Joe Grainger, Executive Director of the Harden Foundation. “The Board also liked their commitment to working supportively with other youth-serving organizations, so the outreach grant will help them to share what they have learned.”
Since 1983, Chartwell School has educated students with dyslexia and related language disabilities in a way that provides them with the learning skills and self-esteem necessary to return successfully to mainstream education. Chartwell is the only school if its kind in the region, serving students from Monterey, San Benito and Santa Cruz counties. Instruction at Chartwell emphasizes best practices in student-centered diagnostic teaching. Chartwell currently enrolls 101 students, ages 6-14. More than 100 volunteers help support the school’s mission.
The school has acquired 29 acres of land overlooking Monterey Bay at the former Ft. Ord and architectural work by EHDD Architecture of San Francisco is complete. EHDD also designed the Monterey Bay Aquarium, the new Monterey Peninsula College Library, and the new CSUMB library. At full build out, Chartwell’s new campus will expand enrollment to 160 students and add programs for younger and older learners. The School is designed to the highest standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED Platinum) and also meets standards for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools. Healthy materials, ample natural daylight, ventilation to maintain a comfortable classroom environment while minimizing noise, and radiant floor heating will help to enhance student achievement. Energy and water conservation will reduce ongoing operating costs and provide additional opportunities for learning.
