CHARTWELL STUDENTS LEARN UNDER SAIL

CHARTWELL STUDENTS LEARN UNDER SAIL

SEASIDE, Calif. – Chartwell School students will experience all-hands-on-deck learning as they don lifejackets to participate in a school under sail on Monday May 17th.  “A school experience at sea allows students to use everything they have been learning in the classroom,” said Executive Director Douglas Atkins.  “They also learn the importance of communicating clearly, because it takes real teamwork to maneuver a vessel under sail.”

The voyages depart from Whart #1 at 8:45 AM (returning at 10:30 AM) and 12:00 Noon (returning at 1:30 PM) and are made possible through the generosity of Sally Christine Rodgers, Randy Repass, West Marine, and Tom Wylie and Dave Wahle of Wylie-Cat.  They are making available the innovative, fast, and very stable 65 ft. research vessel Derek M. Baylis, launched April 22, 2003 in Moss Landing, and a sister ship, the Convergence, launched in 2004. During their time at sea, students will have opportunities to learn about boat design, navigation, marine charts, setting and steering a course, keeping a log, wind direction, waves and currents, and working cooperatively to assure the success of their voyage and the safety of the boat and all its passengers.  They will also have opportunities to observe some of the many kinds of marine life that frequent Monterey Bay.

Chartwell School educates children with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences in ways that provide them with the learning skills and self-esteem necessary to return successfully to mainstream education.   The innovative approaches used by designers of the two new, high-tech vessels accords well with Chartwell’s philosophy of adopting innovative, research-based approaches to teaching and to looking for and developing potential strengths in each student.  For more information, call Chartwell School (831/394-3468) or visit our website at www.chartwell.org.
