Since 1983, Chartwell has been helping students who face challenges in reading and verbal processing develop the skills and self-confidence to learn successfully and return to mainstream education.
The Kresge Foundation of Troy Michigan has offered an exciting $750,000 challenge to raise remaining funds to complete our campaign for the new Chartwell campus. We have raised nearly 95% of funds needed for this $13.7 million project. We invite your participation and support to complete the challenge.
An entire community of learners has shared their ideas to design a campus to serve our students and community well. Just as we adopt proven educational methods to teach our students, we are also selecting the best methods for building for the future. Chartwell is the first school in Monterey County to develop a completely new campus designed specifically to enhance learning outcomes and protect student health. It uses materials and resources that enhance learning. Natural lighting, healthy ventilation, excellent acoustics, and energy efficient design to benefit students, reduce operating costs and conserve natural resources.
It could be the first campus in the entire nation to achieve the highest standards for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, LEED Platinum.
The campus, located on a beautiful 29 acre site at the former Ft. Ord, opened in September 2006. It includes:
ü Modern classrooms that accommodate individual and group activities and active learning. ü Improved instructional spaces for the arts, sciences, and information technology ü McMahan Hall, a multi-use/outreach building with stage, indoor sports, classrooms and meeting spaces, and more. ü Larger areas for sports and physical fitness, gardens, and outdoor projects.. ü Adequate parking, pick-up, and drop-off areas. ü Space for community workshops, professional education, and other services to share our knowledge so that even more children can benefit from what we do.
With a future Phase II, we look forward to adding ü A North Classroom Building to allow for an enrollment of up to 160 students, giving us the capacity to offer possible future early intervention and secondary programs. ü A Library/Media Center.
Some things will not change. We will continue to develop our students' aptitudes and strengths as well as address learning difficulties. We will continue to
- apply the latest, peer-reviewed scientific research. to deveop best practices in teaching.
- provide financial aid of more than $400,000 this year so that families from all walks of life can send their children to Chartwell.
- offer intellectually stimulating content in reading, humanities, mathematics, science, art, technology, health and fitness, with the goal of returning each student to the mainstream school of choice as quickly as possible with minimal supportive services.
- teach the ways our students learn best, so that they have the gifts of confidence and learning throughout their lives.
The new campus will also serve as a center for excellence in reading education and the new home for Chartwell's growing community-serving outreach programs. We will have the space to offer conferences and workshops and strengthen our developing partnerships with other schools and youth organizations. These will improve outcomes for the 10,000 children in our region who can benefit from what we have learned - developing success for students who learn differently.
